Art Galleries and Art Shows: Sneak Peek #18 in my series...

A few days ago, my daughter and I were roaming about the Nob Hill area... as we are inclined to do this time of year (especially)... and we stopped in at: The Talking Fountain Gallery.
It was incredible. It is a fairly small gallery, but it is jam packed with tons of fabulous art.

The owner, KatieCalico, is also one of the featured artists there; and it was a pleasure to be able to chat with her for a bit. The entire atmosphere of the place is welcoming and nurturing to the artistic soul.

Opening in May 2009, the gallery and boutique offer locally made art and goods, custom clothing, jewelry, bags, accessories, stickers, posters, local music, fine art, and lots more. Below are some "sneak peaks" into some of the awesome stuff held inside The Talking Fountain Gallery doors...

... and my Art Gallery "Sneak Peek" for today is: the VSA North 4th Art Center
(peek #16 in my series of local art galleries and shows)

"North Fourth Art Center is a contemporary art center with a social mission. Our independent nonprofit name is VSA arts of New Mexico (VSA NM), affiliated with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Our center is dedicated to full accessibility in the arts for people of all abilities, ages, cultures and income levels. Since 1981, we have focused on providing arts education and exhibition opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. "

The center encompasses programs through AmeriCorps, The VSA CenterArts, City CenterArts, and an explosive Outreach program. It has a gallery, ceramics studio, multiple classrooms, and a theater.

+++++++++++++++

On Friday, The VSA North 4th Art Center featured the opening reception
by The Barrett Foundation here in Albuquerque.

The place was jam packed with the most fabulous art... and it was such a treat to be able to walk around and see it all... Here are a few photos from my visit.

On Sunday.... a friend, my daughter, and I all went down to Tome Gallery for their Day of the Dead Art Show.

Needless to say; it was fabulous.

It was not only a gorgeous drive there... with the roads weaving in and around beautiful cottonwood trees, lush farmlands, and fall splendor... but it was great company... and great conversation the whole way.

I always enjoy going to gallery shows... it is a fabulous way to see what other people are creating... and it amazes me how much talent is right here in our own backyards.

So... here is a sampling of what I saw...

Today has been interesting in alot of ways. I keep having these "spells" (for lack of a better word)... where I get anxious, dizzy, and a horrible headache. About an hour later... I am completely wiped out. I can only assume it is blood sugar problems... but man... it is almost like going through various stages of shock on a fairly routine basis.
I have been eating very well... so... I am confused as to the reactions and why they are occurring... but hey.

That said... my daughter and I went downtown and enjoyed some wonderful food from Annapurna's... which I adore. I also managed to get my submission completed and mailed in to the NYC gallery, Charming Wall... and it will be featured in the show running all of November. This is their final show... and I was very fortunate in getting in.
My submission is shown below...

I was torn as to which photo to pick for my photo of the day project. I saw the wonderful painted VW bus near UNM today as we were driving around (see the first photo above)... and it was just freakin awesome! It reminded me of the old SNL skits with the "land shark"...

But I had also taken the photo below... showing a package sent out in today's mail... and that was the one I ultimately went with.... as I just felt it was a stronger photo in it's composition. More importantly though... is that I am back in the swing of doing art... and that is wonderful :)

Today has been an exhausting day... but an awesome one. Today has been a day for wonderful conversations... wonderful food... and a decadent nap (post benadryl for allergies-- which are really ugly today).

We went to dinner at Los Cuates... which was soooooo good. I really missed being able to get green chile ... and I took this photo (see below) looking out the restaurant window onto the sunny street. This was one of only 2 photos I took today... but I am happy with it.

I am discovering how sick I have been this year. ... and the past few days I have woken to massive bruising all over my legs. Twitches, tremors, headaches... close comrades of mine for the past few days as well. And so... I am on a quest to watch my diet a bit better. I did really well in PA despite all that was going on... but I need to be more dedicated if I am going to get back my strength and my health.

And in the meantime... I have been accepted to show a piece in a New York City gallery... provided I can get a piece of my art ready and in the mail in the next day or so... and so... back to ART!

... and my Art Gallery "Sneak Peek" for today is: Bright Rain Gallery
(peek #13 in my series)

Old Towne is pretty fabulous... and there are quite a few really nice galleries there.
One of the shining stars there is Bright Rain Gallery.

Owners Travis and Molly Black have created a wonderful place that makes you feel as if you have fallen down the proverbial rabbit hole.

Tons of colorful, vibrant and creative artwork abound in this place ... and you leave feeling happy, refreshed and excited to be alive. Painting, sculptures, photography, jewelry, mixed media, wood carvings, clay work... so very many incredible creations to see and ponder upon.
It is an awesome place... and I highly recommend a visit... SOON!

As promised... today I am doing another post on one of the local art venues here in ABQ.

... and my Art Gallery "Sneak Peek" for today is: Chroma Studios
(peek #12 in my series)

"Chroma Studios is a contemporary art gallery focused on the art of New Mexico artists. We also provide studio space rentals for artists and musicians looking for a professional working environment. We now have two studio/classroom locations, downtown and near UNM."

This month's featured artist is Denise Kuntz; with her show entitled
" I See London - I See France."

Denise is a fabulous artist, as well as a wonderful person. She says she was inspired to do this series of paintings..... by the nose art of WWII plane artists; which included her father... and by the life and art of Betty Page.

Owners Paula Manning-Lewis and Aaron Lewis celebrated their 2nd anniversary in April 2010... and are still going strong. They have relocated the gallery space (formerly upstairs at Roma Station) to the new and funky "Underground" space. While it is now a smaller gallery space, it flows well... and continues to showcase top notch New Mexico artists.
This past Friday was the last "First Friday" event they will be participating in until the fall; and they will now be open by appointment only.

(*promo postcard from this month's show at REVLIS)

When I started this blog... I wanted to include lots of local flavor, thoughts on art and photography... and daily musings on life in general
... and I think I have achieved that (at least on most days)...

At the beginning of the year... I started a series of blogposts on local art venues; which I called "Sneak Peeks." However, having been back and forth to PA for many months... I was unable to continue this series. Now that I am back for awhile... and to make it up to you all; I am going to post on 3 different galleries here over the next few days....

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

... and my Art Gallery "Sneak Peek" for today is: REVLIS
(peek #11 in my series)

Behind a somewhat unassuming exterior on Central Ave, lies a fabulous selection of funky...
hip hop... wild and colorful... exciting and fresh... art.
Graffiti fans beware... you will be sucked into the abyss
... at a vibrant new art gallery called REVLIS.

(yah well... I couldn't help myself... )

I stopped in this First Friday for the first time in several months. Only a short while ago, it was CIRQ gallery... and I loved it's creative spark. Honestly, I was a little reluctant to go now that it is a new place... but the owner; Nicole Montes, has gone out of her way to keep it all "street" and exciting and new. She heartily supports local, up and coming talent... and the energy is fierce.

This month's featured artist is J.L. Johnson... a truly fabulous artist.
For more info on J.L. and her art... check out THIS article at Duke City Fix.
Lisa Gill wrote this great article, and it is well worth the reading.
PLUS... here is a link to J.L. Johnson's website.

And so... here are some photos of some of the art at REVLIS...

It's saturday. I am overwhelmed. I am behind on my blog posts; and hope to fill in the gaps here as I am able to get a reliable connection. Dad is doing a little bit better today... although he is not horribly happy about being in the hospital again... but that is the way it goes. Mom has been visiting him as much as she is able; and so are my daughter and I. We are trying to "hold the fort" ... and help with tasks around the house. I also have to sort thru alot of misc paperwork/ bills/ taxes etc and try to get them organized and caught up for my mother. Needless to say; I have a list.. that I may or may not be able to do everything on before I have to head back to Albuquerque. I had planned on leaving Coudersport on the 12th... and going to my niece's house in Lancaster for a day. Then.... I had hoped to take my daughter on a road-trip to New York City as a treat before we head back to NM. We'll see how it pans out... but for now; that is the plan.

Currently, I am sitting in Olga's Cafe and Gallery here in Coudersport, right on main street. It is a fabulous place... and I can log on to the internet while I am here. I have mentioned Olga's on my blog before. Olga is from the Ukraine, having moved to PA after getting married years ago. Once she came to Coudersport, she opened a shop, and has been a major source for the arts here. In December, she and her husband opened up a Cafe/Bar and Gallery in one of the restored buildings on main street. It is simply gorgeous inside. Olga's artwork covers a wide variety of techniques and materials.... original paintings, prints, handmade jewelry, knitted garments and accessories, glass painting on dishware and stemware, Pysanky egg art, felted toys and lovies... and so much more. It's hard to fathom it all.

The cafe features good home cooking... goat cheese pizza, panini bread sandwiches, home-made soups, and endless desserts. And the bar area features domestic and imported beer, wine and mixed drinks.

Upstairs is the gallery... featuring more of Olga's artwork, as well as providing space for classes and such. Plus... free internet... all in a warm and inviting space. You really couldn't ask for more.

Here are some photos from Olga's.....

Today was somewhat relaxing.... I woke up very late... and sat out by the river for a little while. I was able to get some photos of crocus and cinquefoil flowers... sure signs that spring is well on it's way and settling in. I saw robins.... and even some bees!

And I was able to visit with my parents... my dad is quite sore and swollen today. He thinks it is from the transfer in the ambulance... too much stress and lying down ... he thinks. But... he is progressing with his walking... which is just amazing.

... as the sun came to rest in the Allegheny mountains... I took my mom home to rest for the night. Then, my daughter, my nephew, and one of my nieces and I all went to "Olga's Cafe" in town. The featured band tonight was an Irish group from Buffalo, NY. The band's name is "Cairde", and normally they have 4 members in the band, but one was absent tonight. They were quite good...but then, I love Irish music. There was a couple who came with the band; who were trained in Irish dancing, and they got up and did some jigs.... as well as help leading some audience members in a dance... which was fun.

And we enjoyed the atmosphere at Olga's... warm and welcoming... with excellent food... and (in my case)... a good glass of Riesling. We all shared "bangers and mash" (sausage and mashed potatoes), spinach dip with chips, a vegetarian goat cheese (small) pizza, and a buffalo wing panini. Everything was really, really well made and tasty.

And now I am back at my parent's house... enjoying a warm cup of tea... and about to tuck in.... with Irish jigs dancing in my head.... and a warmth in my heart....

It's Friday! ... and my Art Gallery "Sneak Peek" is: the Matrix Gallery
(peek #9 in my series)

One of my all-time favorite galleries in ABQ is the Matrix....located on Central Ave in Nob Hill.

"The Matrix was founded in 2007 by its director Regina Held. Originally from Germany, Regina received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico. She is also the founder and director of New Grounds Print Workshop and Gallery, located next to Matrix Fine Art. New Grounds has been in operation since 1996."

"Matrix Fine Art reflects New Mexico's artistic diversity by featuring two- and three-dimensional work ranging from landscapes to abstract and figurative themes. The 2,000 square foot gallery mounts twelve exhibitions a year with receptions taking place on every First Friday Artscrawl."... the Matrix website.

The front room... currently featuring artwork by Raul Dorn,
and porcelain work by Elizabeth Fritzsche

artwork Karl Koenig

artwork by Jacklyn St. Aubyn

artwork by Susan Reid

artwork by David Koch

The Matrix Fine Art Gallery is always a place of inspiration. They have a huge variety of work, the place is fabulously curated, and it has a very pleasant atmosphere.

With the New Grounds Print Workshop and Gallery and on-site artist studio spaces;
it is also a working, vibrant, active space.
I absolutely love this place... and I think it is a MUST SEE for art lovers in and around the ABQ area.

It's Friday! ... and my Art Gallery "Sneak Peek" is: the ClaireWorks II Gallery
(peek #8 in my series)

In December, owner Claire L. Haye opened her second gallery here in New Mexico.... this time in wonderful Nob Hill. The original ClaireWorks studio and gallery are located in the charming village of Arroyo Seco, New Mexico, a short drive from Taos, on the road to Taos Ski Valley.

Claire L. Haye is the owner and exclusive artist at ClaireWorks, and has been creating art for the last twenty five years (primarily paintings and sculptures) and jewelry for the last fifteen.

I stopped in this week to check it out, and the manager Nancy (as well as the ever handsome Beau the terrier)... was happy to show me around. Featured in this small; but very classy gallery are a few of Claire's sculptures, some very bright and fun paintings, and a wide variety of sterling and precious gemstone jewelry.

All the pieces are very well made, designed, and executed with flair and quality.
I was very impressed with the layout, colors and displays.

In short... if you are looking for a wonderful, quality piece of art or jewelry.... you will definitely want to check this place out.

It's Friday! ... and my Art Gallery "Sneak Peek" is: Black Market Goods
(peek #7 in my series)

"Black Market Goods is a collective of artists who have operated together since 2005. From 2005-2009 we have put on one night art shows showcasing up and coming artists in the area and all across the country. In January 2009 we took over the art space at 112 Morningside NE (Formerly Stove Gallery) to open our gallery/studio/theater/performance space" ...

(click on photo to enlarge it)

I first encountered BMG shows in 2007. I was fortunate enough to be one of their artists in a roving show... and it was my first real taste of art shows here in ABQ.

If I had to describe a "typical" BMG... it would be "beer, babes, and edgy art"... but it is really more than that. It is a high energy, fun loving group of founding members ... who inspire fun and exciting shows. Shows often include live music and performers, runway Fashion shows, beer from Tractor Brewing Co... and lots and lots of art. Edgy, urban, graphic .... these are synonymous with alot of the artists that BMG has showcased.

(click on photo to enlarge it)

But ... I wouldn't consider their shows "typical" by any stretch. They have continually pushed the envelope and aimed high. Featuring so many young, up and coming artist/ groups/ poets/fashionistas... makes them a "gotta see" venue.

One of my favorite galleries here in ABQ, is the Mariposa Gallery.

Owners Liz Dineen and Jennifer Rohrig have gone out of their way to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is home to some of the most talented artisans in New Mexico.

Hence, my Art Gallery "Sneak Peek": Mariposa Gallery in Nob Hill
(peek #6 in my series)

Just thinking about Mariposa makes me smile. It has a wide variety of artwork; ranging from jewelry, paintings, ceramics, encaustics, mixed media and more. Located in Nob Hill, it is a centrally located... and is easily accessible to the art loving community.

I have gone to several shows there... and am always pleased with what they have to offer. I would highly recommend a visit... but plan on spending some time... there is alot to see.

(Included in this post are just a sampling of some of the fabulous artwork there....)

I've been thinking about this for several days now...

Last week I spoke with Jan Jackson of "Dreamscapes Gallery" on 5th street. I had gone down to take an outside shot of the gallery (to replace the one I initially had on this blog post..."Sneak Peak: Dreamscapes Gallery" ). She was kind enough to show me the new art piece she created to be the poster for GlobalQuerque 2010
(http://www.globalquerque.com/) .... and then told me that she will be closing Dreamscapes Gallery in the next month. How incredibly sad. She also said that she will be discounting some of her awesome art pieces over the course of this month... so you will definitely want to go down and get one while you can!

Today's economy is rough. It has been especially rough I think on art venues. People (in general) consider art a luxury item; and when money is tight... it is one of the things on a person's budget that gets cut. It is a vicious cycle, as art feeds the soul... and without art; one can become listless and grey, and life can seem even more bleak than it actually is. We may not be able to justify spending money on it... yet art may be the one thing we truly need to buy.

"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." --- by Pablo Picasso

all artwork by Jan Jackson

~~~
And so today... I have been lazing about the house. I did some laundry, cleaned the house a bit.... put out about 5 pounds of loose bird seed, and one 20lb block of suet and seed for ground birds. ... and some fresh water in the heated birdbath. And I have enjoyed watching the birds ... and enjoyed the snow that fell last night.
What does this have to do with art? Nothing.. and yet... everything. Life is meant to be enjoyed... how you do that is up to you. Be it ... watching birds....making or buying art... drinking coffee and listening to some good music.
Living Simply Tip for the day:
"We have lost the art of living, and in the most important science of all, the science of daily life, the science of behavior, we are complete ignoramuses. We have psychology instead." --D.H. Lawrence
Live creatively. Make art. Drink good coffee. Buy fresh flowers. Enjoy.... life is too short to waste.
Art Gallery "Sneak Peek": 5G Gallery at the The Factory on 5th
The Factory on 5th has been a second home to local artists for about 6 years. It has seen alot of changes in that time... but the past few months have seen even more.
The main building on the property houses "The Kosmos" (home to the Church of Beethoven; as well as a new coffee shop), and about 30 artist studios.
And now; there is the new 5G Gallery towards the front of the property... which is what I am featuring today.
The 5G Gallery is a relative newcomer to the art scene here in ABQ.
Kudos go to RC Naso and David Cudney for the bulk of the work behind the scenes at the 5G Gallery. Recruiting fabulous artists from the Santa Fe area; they put together the premier show "Canyon Road Comes to Albuquerque," held in December.
Last month's show was entitled "The Peoples Art Show", and the next show starts February 26th--"Horsescapes."
(see the flyer at the bottom of this post).
Here are some photos of some of the fine artwork shown at these events:
I have always loved this grouping of buildings, and it seems the perfect local for a gallery space.
The premier show in December had quite the selection of vibrant and interesting art; and time will tell how cool and exciting this venue can become....
Art Gallery: Sneak Peek #4
Today I will be featuring Dreamscapes Gallery.
Dreamscapes is a local art gallery located on 5th street in downtown Albuquerque, owned by artist Jan Jackson.
"Jackson works in an original style she calls “Dreamscapes”. Her paintings of people, animals, and events are stitched to pastel paper or canvas with bright slashes of bold, pastel color. She also works in acrylic, oil and clay. Her most recent work is multi-media sculpture using animal bone, doll parts, fabric and found materials." ...ABQ ArtsCrawl review
I first went to Dreamscapes Gallery this past fall. It is a quiet, unassuming building; and at first; I think the tendancy for most people is to drive right past it. What a shame. While it has a fairly benign exterior; the inside is brimming with color and vibrancy. There are a series of little rooms (this used to be a house), and inside each one (*yes, even the kitchen and bathroom) are works of art to be enjoyed and purchased.
In December, I went for the opening reception of the "Vally of the Art Dolls" show. Wow. It was wall to wall people!!! ... .and the works on display were absolutely stunning. Here are some highlights from that show... which will give you an idea of the cool artwork offered there on a regular basis.
I highly recommend checking it out. Owner Jan Jackson is a very talented artist, and the gallery is one of ABQ's hidden jewels. Bright and funky art abounds here... :)
Art Gallery: Sneak Peek #3
(I hope you are all enjoying this series... I know I am... it's fun to take "sneak peeks".)
Today, I am featuring the fabulous Harwood Art Center.
"The Harwood Art Center is one of the most alive art places in Albuquerque. Once a boarding school for girls, the Harwood Art Center has been home to a thriving art colony since 1992. The Harwood is a community of artists, a gathering place that brings the public and the art community together; it is a secure space for artists to work and a supportive environment in which artistic experimentation is celebrated.
The building's colorful history is etched in the walls and long corridors. Wandering through the high-ceilings and wide hallways of the imposing old brick building is both an exciting and eerie experience. One can easily imagine uniformed young girls living, studying and growing through adolescence in these rooms.
Many of the old classrooms and dorm rooms (whether lonely places of exile or snug havens) are now lively studios for about 60 painters, sculptors, photographers, art therapists, poets, performance artists and graphic artists. "--- info taken from the Collector's Guide
"The Harwood is the community outreach program of Escuela del Sol, an independent, non-profit Montessori school founded in 1968. Harwood was started to build and sustain connections between the school and the neighborhood in which it is located, as well as the larger community of Albuquerque. The unique relationship between school and community art center provides limitless opportunities for personal and community-wide education, enrichment, and growth through the arts." --from the Harwood website
Here are some photos from the wonderful 12x12 Annual Fundraiser Show
I first discovered the Harwood about a year ago. A friend of a friend was having an exhibit there, and I went to see it. I was fascinated with the actual building... as well as all the wonderful things the center does in the art community. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to have seen several shows at the Harwood Center; including the 12x12 Annual Fundraising event.
And... I am now taking my second class through the center... with artist Cynthia Cook.
I think that the Harwood is one of the most vibrant, essential, and active artist hubs in ABQ... and I think it should be on everyone's MUST SEE list.
Art Gallery: Sneak Peek #2
Today I am featuring the South Broadway Cultural Center here in ABQ. To be honest, in all the years that I have lived here; I didn't realize what a treasure this place is. Now I do.
The South Broadway Cultural Center (SBCC) is "a multi-cultural, visual, performing and literary art center, that promotes, preserves and educates the community about the cultures and ethnicities that define Albuquerque."
My most recent trip to the gallery was a great honor. One of my photographs was featured in the "La Guadalupana 2009 Art Exhibit" that ended on January 5th. The photos I am including for today's post, are from that exhibit; which was curated by Augustine Romero.
In addition to the fabulous gallery space, there is the John Lewis Theater(which hosts musical and theatrical events throughout the year), a public library, and services for youths and adults.
I highly recommend a leisurely visit to this gallery space. It is fabulous.
Today I went to the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History. While, I suppose, there are some that would not consider it a "gallery"... as in ... let's go buy some art..... I definately consider it one. And so... it is my first "Art Gallery: Sneak Peek" of 2010. (as in ... a peek inside)
The museum, as we know it, first started as a feature at the Albuquerque International Sunport in 1967. It later outgrew the area, and was built in it's current location by Antoine Predock.
According to Fodor's Guide: "This modern structure, which underwent a spectacular 40,000-square-foot expansion in 2004, houses the largest collection of Spanish-colonial artifacts in the nation, along with relics of the city's birth and development. The centerpiece of the colonial exhibit is a pair of life-size models of Spanish conquistadors in original chain mail and armor. Perhaps the one on horseback is Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, who, in search of gold, led a small army into New Mexico in 1540—the turning point in the region's history. Among the museum's attractions are treasure chests filled with pearls and gold coins, religious artifacts, and early maps (some dating from the 15th century and showing California as an island). A multimedia presentation chronicles the development of the city since 1875. The sculpture garden contains 45 works by 20th-century southwestern artists that include Glenna Goodacre, Michael Naranjo, and Luís Jiménez."
Specifically; I went with a friend today to see the "Albuquerque Now" presentation.
Albuquerque Now is a pair of exhibitions, comprised of two distinct installations of recent works created by artists in Albuquerque. A wide variety of media and styles will be featured, from traditional to post-modern, and the artists represented range in age from the mid-twenties to over eighty.
Among the artists included in Albuquerque Now Fall :
Jane Abrams, Garo Antreasian, Cynthia Cook, Ann Dunbar, Betty Hahn, Aaron Karp, Stephanie Lerma, Orlando Leyba,
Reg Loving, Santiago Pérez, Bart Prince, Alan Radebaugh, Holly Roberts, Peter White
It was simply stunning. Words cannot describe it.... but I was blown away.
Curator of Art, Andrew Connors (who envisioned and put together this show) said, ''The more I discover about Albuquerque, the more I appreciate the real, visceral, integral and experimental feel of the art scene here,'' Connors explains. ''Some of our most significant artists possess a pioneering enthusiasm...there’s something about the appeal of New Mexico and the Southwest lifestyle that allows people to be who they are without expectations.''
I couldn't have said it better myself....
