Treasures.
Everyone has different opinions as to what constitutes a treasure...
and that's part of what makes the whole concept so wonderful;
because what is a great treasure to one person may not be to another person; and vice- verse.

I love to gather little treasures.
For me... it is bits and bobs, rocks and bones... twigs, shells and so much more.
I've made lots of jewelry over the years, and much of it feature treasures of one variety or another.
One of the projects I am working on these days involve using local PA found treasures...
and showcasing them in pendants and earrings and such.
Stay tuned!

And in other news... last night I went to the local library.
I mention this; because it is such a treasure and a luxury to have such a wonderful library right here in town.
It is a fabulous resource that (unfortunately) is often under utilized and appreciated by many.
But not this girl! Within minutes, I had a fabulous stack of books that I happily checked out.
So... go grab a book! ... and I'll see you all tomorrow.

3-26-15

I love foggy days.... and today is one of them.
One of those days when you just want to curl up with a good book or movie and shut yourself away from the world. Ah.... but I've work to do.

Today's photo, is one I took just a few minutes ago.
I try to take photos most every single day ... since 2009 when I started a daily project; and just kept it up. There are days I've missed, but overall... it's amazing to think about.
There are lots of things I am passionate about; and photography is certainly in the tops of that list.
I don't know what I would do without my camera in hand...

Enjoy your day! ... and I'll see you all tomorrow.

3-25-15

Today the weather is a bit dull and dreary... but things are coming awake from the winter.
Last night, there were several deer in the yard... and today the birds are flocking to the birdfeeder.
And me? I am tired... still working on healing from a Lupus flare... but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel...
or in the case of the photo above... at the edge of the woods >>grin<<

This year promises to be full of fun.
Since moving back to PA just over a year ago; I've been compiling a list of shows and events in the area -- specifically, ones that feature artisans to vend at. Then I got (really) busy with the Potter County Artisan Center; and it just got put to the back burner. Now, I have a brief window of time; and so I am working on it again. I was very surprised that a "master list" of sorts did not exist... that no one had compiled one before... but there ya go. And so... I've got it all started; and a page on Facebook, and a master list and photos of flyers as they are available. The hope is, that folks will be more aware of artisan events in the area... put up flyers... spread the word... attend... and support local artisans and crafts-folk. It really benefits an entire community when people pull together in support like that.... and it can make such a difference in the lives of so many.

And what am I personally planning?
Well, vending at some of those shows for sure... but also trying to get my home studio up and running...
and (eventually) open to the public for shows and open studio tours and such.
I have several dear friends who are working on their businesses... and I want to help out as much as possible... showing with them.... spreading the word...
It's all about making art.... and enjoying the craft.... and sharing that passion with as many folks as possible.
To that end; I can see classes and special events coming this year as well.

And then, I need to work on the yard... and the (future) gardens.... and ... and...
Lots of fun coming up... lots of art.... lots of jewelry making.... lots of great times with great friends.
And isn't that what it's all about? Helping each other... sharing our passions and knowledge with others...
having fun.... and yes, hopefully making a living at it along the way.
Here's to the coming spring! ... and a great (rest of the) year to come.

And here is a new necklace and earring set I made; that will be listed this week in my Etsy shop.
It is comprised of stunningly gorgeous hunks of turquoise, and bright red coral beads... and lots of sterling silver.

3-24-15

I never watch the shopping channels.

A couple of weeks ago, I was randomly cruising through some of the stations on the TV; and came across one of those shopping channels... and they were featuring Jay King.
Jay King owns and operates a huge jewelry making business. He is known for his gemstone pieces that he travels the world looking for, and has his artisans (in house) make pieces for. He sells them in high end stores; and on tv. There's much controversy around his work.... about how and where it's made... and I won't go into it. Anyway. The point is; he is much more familiar with the current prices and such of specific gemstones; than I am. It was through this show; that I came to find out that certain turquoise and coral beads... had taken a sharp upturn in their value; as the amount of those gemstones are being depleted and completely mined out. This happens a lot in the world of gemstones. They will "discover" a certain stone; mine all they can.... and then not be able to find any more of it... so the price radically jumps.
Anyway. It encouraged me to look through my stash... and see what I had.... and do some research myself.
It's hard to realize.... but I've been buying and making jewelry since 1995; selling since 97.
That's more than a few years of stashing beads.... and I've got a few.
It prompted me to gather a few things from my stash of beads... which led me to the next little "tidbit"...

I had made a pair of earrings, that were comprised of some fabulous stone beads.... and these seeds that were made into beads. And went to look up the seed's official name for a description I was writing.
I used to make more talisman, ethnic and religion inspired jewelry.... and need to get back into it.
(I love it.... and they are my favorite things to make).
Anyway, years ago, I had purchased a bag or two of these seeds that supposedly came from Ecuador (turns out, they actually may be from Peru).
They were drilled; and this type of seed had been used in native made jewelry for hundreds of years. The indigenous people of the area felt they had powers towards fertility and protection against evil; and so they were often fashioned into talismans and bracelets and such.
I couldn't remember the name of the seeds; and had lost that paperwork in the move.
Shockingly, I read that these seeds are no longer allowed to be sold in the USA. Years ago, there had been some cases where the seeds had been used on a bracelet; the bracelet had broken; the seeds had been broken (they have an outer casing).... and someone had eaten them. Yes, you heard me right.
(there was also a case of a woman in the UK who claimed wearing the bracelet had caused all sorts of health issues over the course of a year). Well; apparently these seeds are highly toxic (many times worse than ricin or arsenic).
The catch is.... there are 2 of these seed plants that are used.
One is much more highly toxic than the other; but both are toxic if ingested. They look the same (at least to me) in photos. So, how do I know if I have the severely toxic seed, or the not-so-toxic seed?
I don't. But either way; they are not safe to use in jewelry anymore... as least not in the US where they have been banned.
Now, ironically, the only things I ever made with these seeds were for myself... and I've had no problems (course, I didn't eat them). The problem now, is how to dispose of them.
Everything I've read says to just bag them and put them in the trash.... .which seems ludicrous.
And, of course, there were more thank a few jokes about the "bad seed" we had in the house...

Point here, is.... you learn something new every day.
If you are a lover of your craft; you are always researching... reading... learning... trying new skills...
And so on it goes.

The photos above, show some of the custom orders I have done this week.
2 necklaces...each with solid sterling silver pendants with gemstone dangles.... strung on natural leather cording. The pendant is my own design; and the dangles showcase monthly birthstones.

The 2nd series of photos are of a stunning full size Catholic rosary made in the "unbreakable" pattern of wire wrapping.
It has both gold and silver, and lots of clear faceted crystal glass beads from Europe.
I love how it turned out.

3-23-15

The photos for today's post are from this weekend's snowstorm... which was just gorgeous.
And already, it is (mostly) gone from up here on the hill.
In fact, it quite possibly may have been the last snow of the winter season...
Just looking at my photos from last year; it looks like we still had quite a bit of snow on the ground in early March; but by this week...
things were mostly melted.... and I've got photos of flowers on the last day of March coming up through the ground.
Not a scientific report, by any stretch, but a sign that maybe spring is coming 'round for good now.

But today it's sunny and it's my day off...
... so I'm off to enjoy it.
Hope you all do too... and I'll see you back here tomorrow.

for the weekend

It's the spring equinox... and we've had a last snowstorm... and it's beautiful.
Just a reminder, I think... of how gorgeous snow can be.
The photo; above; is one I took yesterday afternoon... and the ones below are of some earrings I made yesterday as well.
It's been busy. And it's been good.
I hope all is well with you all... and here are some links to look at this weekend:

See you all on Monday.

3-20-15

And today I think Mother Nature is laughing her ass off...
Because it's the first day of spring, a solar eclipse, and the supermoon... all at once.
And of course... it's snowing like crazy.... after yesterday's full day of sunny weather.
I am sure the birds are bewildered.

So... what am I up to on this Freaky Friday??!
I think, under the circumstances; I am going to stay at home.
I am going to have a fire in the fireplace... make some coffee...
put on a movie or two (this is what we got from Netflix this week... and this one.... and this one)
and finish up some jewelry orders.
I have 2 custom pendants that I am making; and yesterday I got an order for a custom made rosary...
a pending gift for a friend of a friend for Easter coming up soon.
I also have some papers I need to get organized, filled out, and in the mail...

So... stay warm my friends... and I will see you all tomorrow for my weekend post.

3-19-15

The photos for today's post are courtesy of my daughter; who took a long walk in the woods today with the camera
while I was out running errands. (I cropped and edited them).
It was a perfect day to be out and about.
The sun was shining, the snow is slowly melting... and although the woods are knee deep in snow in a lot of parts;
most of the surrounding areas are in the "thawing" phase of things.
Before you know it; bulbs will be forcing shoots out of the ground... and spring will be on it's way.

And now, I am home and getting to work on a few things... but in the meantime...
Here are some  happy photos of spring on it's way...
See you all tomorrow.

3-18-15

Well, it's Wednesday already... and this week the days are just flying by.
The weather is steadily getting nicer and warmer...
and the spring season will be on us in no time.

This week we've been battling the melting snow... which is flooding our basement/ studio space again.
Albeit... on a much lesser scale than last year. Progress is being made.
What this means though, is that the kitchen table has become sort of a de facto studio space.
On one hand, it's super awesome... because everything is out and about...
on the other... well... everything is out and about.

But here is what's being worked on this week...
(and of course, it's all subject to change... which is half the fun).
Back to work! ... see you all tomorrow.

3-17-15

Carrying on our conversation from the weekend ---
talking about goals to set.... places I want to go... things I want to do.
The problem for me... is always that I have too many ideas.
Too many things I want to do.
Too many places I want to go.
Too many projects I want to work on.

How do you narrow it down?
That for me; is the extreme hard part.

Being a list-maker; I usually resort to making lists.
I list what I want to do... and (being a former nurse)... I triage it (so to speak)
... and list it according to the importance I place upon it.
How feasible is it? How much enjoyment will I get out of it?
Do I think it will be well received?
And if not, is it still worth doing?

Like I said in the previous weekend post... sometimes you just have to trust your gut.
It usually works out.

~~~~~~~
*about the photo for today's post:
This shot is of a statue in a local cemetery. I love religious iconography; and love to play around with images like this.
This one has sort of a digital collage effect, with several textures woven into it.
for the weekend
Creativity is a way of life.
If we are true creatives, that spark... that joy and sense of expression leaks out into everything we do.
From making dinner, to what we wear.... to how we live.
And, as confident in our art (or maybe not)... we seldom trust our own instincts.
We don't trust our own opinions.
We are constantly looking for a guru, a teacher.... someone to show us the path in which we need to go. And the lesson most of us take away (once we really think about it)... is that there probably isn't any one person ... but an amalgamation of events... conversations... trials and errors.... that truly lead us. And tons of books, movies... friends... art.... and who knows what else... that inspires us... shapes us... and influences us.
March is a time of great change.
Weather is in great flux... animals are in waking up (and getting busy) mode...
Traditionally; it is a time of spring cleaning.... clearing out...
planting seed... and more.
So this weekend; I am thinking on ... things I want to do this year.
Goals to set... places I want to go... things I want to make... and more.
Once you know where you want to go... it's easier to make a map.
~~~~~~

And, because it's the weekend -- I have some interesting links to share with you all:
*a great motivational video
*authentic Irish pubs in America
*a look at this OCD artist
*Historic PA --- Grey Towers in Milford, PA. Home of Gifford Pinchot
*sunken city! This is awesome.
*these seniors answer an age-old question
*life living off the grid. Here... and here.
*making peace with some wild neighbors
*some iconic Jack Keroac quotes
*beets! I had some this week, and a friend sent me this link.
*migrating tundra swans. This was another link a friend sent me.... so pretty.
*Casey Legler -- an awesome woman, with a great story.... and more.
*when the book is so much more than the cover.
*new twist on an old piece.

and.... is this your dream? ... write an essay... you could win it!

Have a great weekend; and I'll see you all back here on Monday.

3-13-15

It's amazing how quickly things change.
One week it's freezing, and the next.... everything is melting... and the sun is shining.
I've been quite busy this week... and today woke up early as a lady was coming to the house.
I was making coffee... and this little guy was staring in my windows...
he was probably just shocked to see me awake so early >>wink<<

There are days when I feel like I've been running, and running, and running... and just can't take another step.
Everything hurts. Everything seems a bit overwhelming.
This is one of those days.
So I am taking it as a sign to sit back and rest a bit.

Some days you scurry around and gather nuts.... some days you stay in your tree.
See you all tomorrow for my weekend post.

3-12-15

I took this photo a couple years ago... and never used it or edited it.
Today, I stumbled upon it in my files, and figured it was about time  >>wink<<

It's melting. The sun has come out; and everything is awash in melting snow.
And... we only have a smaller layer of water in the basement... and fortunately, everything is (for the most part) up on shelving...
so it's much better than last year. And we have a shop vac... and a dehumidifier... so that certainly helps.

Today I am finishing up some small projects/ orders, working on some misc paperwork, doing some emails, etc.
And, I have some product to take photos of... which is always fun.
More of the "business" end of the art business today.
Some days are like that.... and it's good. It's full of adding things up, balancing ledgers, printing receipts.... and coffee... and music... which is always good.

And today I had a visit from some friends... both artists/ artisans... who are in the process of getting back to doing things they love... working for people they love... eating healthy and such...
More folks on the same path as us... and it's wonderful.
We got to talk about gardens, and seeds, and music... food... good friends and family.
All great things!
So dig out your seed catalogs.... make some tea.. stay dry... and I'll see you all tomorrow.

3-11-15

Today I am scheduled to take some portraits... of a friend.
I haven't done portraiture in quite awhile; but there was a time when I photographed babies, couples, weddings and such. Studio photography just isn't one of my more favorite things to do.
I have always tended to have more of a journalistic style.
So... to this end; today's portrait is more along the lines of photo journalism.

The master (in my opinion) of photo journalism was Henri Cartier -Bresson.
His style is definitely a more candid... street style.... which I love.
I also adore Vivian Maier.... and encourage you to look at her work. (and here)

The main difference; at least for me.... with this style and typical portraiture... is context.
What environment is the person in? What do they do? Where do they work?
If the person works in a restaurant; show them in a busy cafe setting.
Or in the kitchen with steam in the air... that sort of thing.

So... some basics?
*shoot close-up; or crop in.
*watch your depth of field (a narrow selective focus is most often, more interesting)
*watch your sharpness. You can have a completely "fuzzy" portrait that looks awesome... but the eyes still have to be razor sharp.
*take lots and lots of photos. It's a digital world; you you don't need to worry so much about the cost of film and extensive printing.... so take lots. Play around... try everything.
** and when all else fails.... don't listen to me... or for that matter, to anyone else. Only YOU can take a shot that is YOUR style.... and with YOUR point of view. Remember, everything you read, everything you've already seen... just provides insight and a muse.

And what do the photos for today's post have to do with the content of today's post?
Nothing. I just thought they were pretty.
--see you all tomorrow.

3-10-15

Spring! It's coming!!!
I stepped out today, and saw this gorgeous sunny glow coming from the breaks in the woods.
Squirrels, Blue Jays, doves, nuthatches... all kinds of critters and feathered ones were singing and munching on the cracked corn in the yard... and it was awesome.

And I've been busy.
I've finished up all the Give-Away packages... and they are out in the mail today.
(I've sent gift packages to 5 random people who read my blog/ comment on my Facebook posts).
The packages each contain a set of handmade envelopes with cards, a sampling of guitar picks (cut from recycled store gift cards), one of my photographs cut into an ACEO card, and a pair of handmade earrings.

And, I've been making some jewelry for the new section in my Etsy shop; Cha-Ching.
Cha-Ching (the sound of happy cash registers and savvy customers everywhere)... features handmade items that are in the $10 and under price range (for the most part). They are easy on the wallet.... but not short on style. These are items that are made from less expensive supplies (or ones I got at a fabulous deal)... or items that are on clearance.
This way, there are items in my shop from $1- $150!
Here are some earrings I listed today:

---- see you all tomorrow.

3-9-15

Well, it's my day off...
and I am taking it.
See you tomorrow.

(but in the meantime, here are some photos I took about an hour ago)

for the weekend

A sure sign of spring coming (at least for me)... we've had a scurry of very brave squirrels frolicking about the yard today....
and it's been entertaining, to say the least. ... as they come down the hill at "warp speed" and tend to wipe out on the ice that is on top of all the snow. I'm sure there's a nut joke in there somewhere.

This weekend promises to be one of rest, relaxation... and maybe some art/ craft making.
But before I go... And, because it's the weekend...
I've got some interesting links to share with you all:

*most awesome thing ever
*you think it's cold here
*live like a movie star
*how to learn about racial identity from these girls
*playing in the dirt!
*ah, language. Look here, here ... and here
*and yes, redheads are better (wink)
*what a great post
*International Women's Day is March 8th.
*the next trend?
*this looks interesting
*gifts from crows

and just because... Did you know that there are "good news" websites?
Look here, here.... and here.

Happy Friday!
Happy full moon (read more here)!
Happy (almost) weekend!

Yesterday I was talking about ways to get inspired... or as I put it... surviving when things are dumped on your kitchen table >>grin<<
But, it really can be an inspiration to go through things you already have.
Look for specific color combos... like... multiples of yellow or some such.
Or look for opposite color combos on the color wheel.... like blue and yellow.
Or... think of something in nature that has that particular combination (like a bird?) and go with it.
Then the mind wanders to ... feathers... wings... flight... soaring... sunshine.... you get the idea.

Inspiration is everywhere if you take a minute to look.
Sometimes it's just the simple act of slowing down... concentrating on your breathing... or the music on the radio.... or the wind in the trees... or coloring! (read more here).... but it will come.

Today, I am posting some links that I think are inspiring (all on jewelry making)... and you may too:
