for the weekend

So... this week was my husband's birthday; and we had a friend from the UK who is here in the US on a short vacation.... so we decided to make a quick overnight visit to Philadelphia. We had hoped to see our friend, but alas, things did not work out. We did, however, manage to go to the Mütter Museum -- which has been on our "bucket list" for a very long time. It did not disappoint.

The Mütter Museum is not a huge museum, but it has lots to offer. Some folks may feel it is a bit on the macabre side --- featuring medical oddities, specimens and the like.... but it is also a vast teaching facility. When we lived in Albuquerque, there was a traveling exhibit that went through called "Bodies: The Exhibit" that we saw, and it was wonderful. I think this had a connection somehow to the Mütter, but regardless, we learned about the Mütter at about the same time.
The museum has tons of interesting skeletons, specimens, antique surgical tools.... strange, yet fascinating bits.... and lots of information to go along with it all. I think we certainly could have spent much more than the 3-4hrs that we did, just trying to gleen some of the vast knowledge from it's shelves. Plus, there was an art exhibit in a separate area... all artworks inspired by items in the museum itself. And, there was an incredible courtyard area with an amazing medicinal herb garden. Needless to say, we had fun.

From there we strolled about the neighborhood... stopping in at Maxamillan's Gentlemen's Quarters Barber Parlor, where Jim may have gotten the best shave and haircut of his entire life (plus it looked super cool, and everyone was amazingly nice). Then we went to Mama's Vegetarian for an incredible Falafal pita sandwich and fries. whoa. it was good. Afterward, we finished it all off with a cappuccino from the Nook Bakery and Coffee Bar... where they had the prettiest chocolates I have ever seen.

Needless to say, I can't put all the experiences, sites and sounds into one post... nor can I possibly show you all the photos... but I will share some more next week. Hope you all have a great weekend, and I will see you all back here on Monday.
